Member Resolution Specialist

McAllen, TX

The Texas AFT is posting for a Member Resolution Specialist to work with Texas AFT and our affiliates to provide overall representation for member-related questions, issues, concerns, and grievances. Texas AFT staff are subject to assignments throughout the state based on the needs of our union.  This position will be based in McAllen, TX and may require some travel.

Duties: 

Specific job duties include:  

  • Identifies potential organizing/advocacy opportunities within member issues/concerns 
  • Identifies potential union advocates during the resolution process  
  • Briefs members of the organizing team regarding advocacy and organizing opportunities or potential activists as appropriate 
  • Responds to calls and messages from members with issues/concerns 
  • Utilizes the EMMA data system
  • Maintains records of members and their issues through our database systems 
  • Assists members with rebuttal letters to write-ups, emails, phone calls or meetings to/with supervisors 
  • Represents members in hearings via phone conference or virtually 
  • Evaluates and processes member disputes through the district level where appropriate  
  • Conducts both one on one and group meetings either in-person or in a virtual environment
  • Assists affiliates with organizing and servicing requirements as needed 
  • Other duties as assigned.    

Qualifications:  

Required knowledge and skills:   

  • Exhibit a working knowledge of the Texas Education Code, Texas Administrative Code, general education law as well as district level policy  
  • Proficiency in research and analysis 
  • Proficiency in the use of virtual meeting platforms 
  • Ability to build trusting relationships and maintaining confidence of worker members 
  • Exercise sound judgment 
  • Highly organized and self-motivated 
  • Ability to manage resources, data, and time 
  • Must maintain confidentiality 
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft suite, smart sheets, and zoom 

Other requirements and expectations: 

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills 
  • Have a valid Texas driver’s license, current >span class="apple-converted-space"> and reliable transportation 
  • Willingness to travel for participation in Texas AFT/AFT campaigns or events 
  • Spanish speaker a plus
